WHY AND HOW TO CHOOSE A UK INDEPENDENT (PRIVATE) SCHOOL

Independent schools in the UK offer a level of specialised education that most government funded schools simply can’t compete with.

With small class sizes allowing for one-on-one attention, a dedicated focus on the development of the whole child through a range of sports, other extra-curricular activities and the academic success pupils enjoy, it is no wonder that parents from all over the world are drawn in.

There are many types of independent schools in the UK. Some are set in historic British towns and culturally rich cities whilst others are located in the heart of beautiful countryside surrounded by vast open spaces. There is no shortage of choice (when it comes to choosing a school) whether you are looking for a day or boarding school, a selective or non-selective school, a single-sex or co-educational environment or a specialist school that offers education for children with special needs.

There is often a mistaken belief that paying school fees will buy top exam results, extra-curricular success and a strong set of values. What parents are actually investing in is the best opportunity for their children to achieve these things, and in order for the opportunities to be realised not only do pupils need to work hard, but parents need to be continually supportive.

When identifying potential schools we urge parents to go beyond simply looking at glossy prospectuses, impressive facilities and orchestrated open days. We encourage families to visit a number of schools to really get a sense of the atmosphere during a normal school day. It is always valuable to talk to the students, see how they interact with staff and in turn how the staff interact with the students. Do not be afraid or intimidated to talk to other parents, after all they have been through the same process and now know the school as well as anyone.

Remember that there is no such thing as the “best school”. What you are really looking for is the best school for your individual child to grow and develop and it is well worth taking the time to establish which one that is likely to be for your son or daughter.

As independent educational consultants we understand how hard the process of choosing a school is and that is why we provide a completely impartial advice and placement service to families looking for the right private school or college. We refer students to the full range of schools and colleges and assist with all aspects of the process from selecting schools to preparing for entrance tests and interviews.

Our aim is always to find the best possible school/college for each student.
